About Outerlands

Outerlands was born out of the desire to make medical knowledge and services more accessible to all - especially along the intersection of outdoor and remote recreation. Numerous physical, socio-economic, and psychological barriers exist that prevent folx from comfortably thriving in the outdoors - access to medical knowledge and care being a large component. Our goal is to decrease those barriers by providing tailored and comprehensive medical training.

Our team of certified medical professionals and experienced outdoor enthusiasts are dedicated to providing high-quality education. Each course is catered to the particular work and life hazards of the group, offered with numerous course lengths and certifications, crafted with flexible scheduling, and various sliding scale fees to accommodate diverse needs. Every training is a blend of classroom lectures and hands-on scenario practice maximizing learning styles and keeping people engaged as they prepare for the unknown of emergency medical responding.

Big shout out to our friends at the @yosemiteguideservice for hosting! If you’re ever in the Yosemite or Tahoe areas and looking for experienced guiding services, check them out. We had the pleasure of teaching a WFA class with them a few years ago and fully support their mission!

Excellent Saturday morning course with our fantastic partner @we_are_justice_outside! We taught Adult First Aid for numerous folx wanting more backcountry medical experience to keep themselves and their communities safe. Thank you for a wonderful group and scenic classroom!

A few tid bits of our course last week with @nurture___nature in Oakland! These facilitators are trained up in CPR/First Aid and are ready to take Bay Area youth on field trips this school year!

A highlight of the #bittercotyledons, @pajarovalleypride_831 and @puentesnature event last weekend were the mini workshops! Participants were able to take workshops on knot tying, camping gear 101, connection to land/species identification hike, and wilderness first aid.

We had a great time facilitating mini lessons and patient/responder scenarios for the group! The classroom view was also five star! 😎🌊🌅🤩

We had a fantastic day providing medical support and tabling at the @walknrollpleasanthill Family Bike Fest yesterday! There were hundreds of kids and parents learning how to bike safely, repair bikes, and even challenging themselves on bike park obstacle courses! 🚴

A huge shoutout to the folx at @bayareabikeproject for helping us keep the tracks safe, as well as for wearing those stellar party shirts. 🥳

The @usgsvolcanoes team is an incredible group of scientists - volcanologists, geologists, seismologists, geophysicists, and more - that travel to remote areas of the world and study volcanic activity. They are consistently exposed to the elements, sharp and steep terrain, noxious gasses, potential eruptions and lava flows, wildlife, and anything else you can imagine. They are also in vastly wild places doing said research - the Bering Sea of Alaska, Palmyra Atoll, Mt. Shasta, the far eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, deep in the Cascade range, Kilauea on Maui - the list goes on.

They are also a group that prioritizes their training, ensuring each staff member has access to certifications and re-certifications to keep themselves and their teammates safe in the backcountry. We love working with this group and are excited every time we are invited back!

Last weekend we had a #splintingworkshop with @queercrushclimbing to address the common issue of sprained ankles at the crag. Here are numerous ways that you can splint a sprained ankle and still get your climb on! … Or just get back to the car safely with minimal additional damage.

1 - Using a jacket and some cordelette. This puffy jacket is zipped and wrapped around the ankle for comfort (padding from the rope) as well as adds compression and stability. Cordelette is tied in a figure 8 pattern around the ankle while dorsiflexing the ankle (pulling the toe towards the shin).

2 - The same wrap as #1, with an added piece of sling that pulls the toe further up and is tightened with a windlasse (the carabiner) and clipped back on to itself.

3 - An ACE bandage wrapped in a figure 8 around the ankle. This is easy to apply outside or inside of any shoe.

4 - Climbing tape used to make stirrups, J’s, and figure 8’s around the ankle while emphasizing dorsiflexion (the pull of the toe towards shin). This can be done underneath your climbing shoes!

5- Coban wrap tied in figure 8’s around the ankle with a reversal of directions to pull the ankle equally in both directions. Coban is flexible, strong, sticks to itself, easy to tear, and even easy to undo and re-use. It was the ranked the all around winner in this splinting contest and an easy piece of gear to add to your climbing kit!

A patient in shock will lose body temperature as their body struggles to maintain adequate blood pressure and perfusion. Any loss of blood will compound that, as blood loss is also heat loss.

These State Park staff practice various ways to wrap patients and treat for shock, as well as hypothermia. Thank you all for preparing for the unexpected!

A few highlights from an incredible Wilderness First Aid course with @etctrips, @etcyouthlead, and @etcrivercamp staff and volunteers. They had hands-on practice stopping major bleeds, assessing life threats, mitigating environmental hazards, splinting musculoskeletal injuries, and generally providing stellar patient care. These are the folx you want to have joining your outdoor adventures!
